Connections to Disaster situates itself after the 2004 Indian Ocean Tsunami, in the Indonesian city of Banda Aceh. Utterly devastated by the tsunami’s wave, the city faced the enormous task of rebuilding, economically, physically, and psychologically. This project aims to address the shortage of raw building material, while improving the general tectonic of the city. At the same time, the new building technique this project proposes, which combines debris material into stronger composites, broaches the concept of ‘memory’, and the potential positive impact of the reminder of destruction.
